Karra Yerta Wines is a family-owned boutique winery situated high in the beautiful Flaxmans Valley, Barossa Hills area of the Mt Lofty Ranges, South Australia. The Barossa Hills region, also known as the Barossa Ranges, including Keyneton, Eden Valley, Flaxmans Valley and Springton - is generally classed as land from above 300m to 600m sea level, and is noticeably cooler than the Barossa Valley “floor”, so the grapes take longer to mature here. Therefore, vintage is about a month later than on the valley floor and due to this, some believe that the hills grapes have more body and flavour than grapes harvested from the lower grounds. The Eden Valley area is famous for its dry rieslings and many wines produced from the region have won world-wide acclaim.

The name “Karra Yerta”, is derived from the local Aboriginal Kaurna, pronounced “garna”, language. Karra refers to the majestic Redgum trees of the area and Yerta, means country, or ground.

This remarkable, unspoilt country, with crisp, clean air and large areas of native bush, is home to many species of native fauna, including kookaburras, echidnas, superb fairy wrens, and kangaroos. On moonlit nights, beneath a million twinkling stars, we often enjoy the beautiful symphonies of warbling magpies, croaking banjo frogs and chirping crickets.

Within this pristine environment, the vines that produce the Eden Valley Shiraz and Eden Valley Riesling are dry-grown and hand-picked. Our total production is quite small in quantity by today's standards and at this stage is restricted primarily to the produce of a small vineyard in the Barossa Hills, of old, low-yielding Riesling and Shiraz. We also make a small quantity of Barossa Shiraz sourced from the world renowned Kalimna/Moppa Road area, which is amongst vineyards that supply grapes for one of Australia's most famous wines. With vineyards very near to us supplying the labels of Pewsey Vale, Heggies, Flaxman, Hobbs, Ringland, Wroxton Grange and Grant Burge, our immediate geographical location is one of Australias finest areas for producing quality wines and we aim to help maintain the regions fine reputation with our own products.

Living here is the inspiration for our wines. It is a very different way of life as there is no kerbing, street-lighting or mains water supply (each property is self-sufficient regarding water supply, relying on rain water storage mainly, and perhaps a dam or bore). There is a great neighbourhood spirit here with many afternoons or evenings spent chatting and enjoying fine bottles of wine and platters of cheese, pate' and crackers. It is a lifestyle that many dream of, and one which all of us living here appreciate.
